Flooded With Thanksgiving

Marina Layton

Here we are celebrating another Thanksgiving, and my mind is flooded with happy memories and expectant hope.

As the third child of a Dutch immigrant couple, my thanksgiving memories are wonderful. My father arrived with his three siblings and his widowed mother, traveling the Atlantic in steerage class on a ship, landing in New York, and then traveling by train across the United States arriving in Pasadena on Thanksgiving Day. Thus, a big celebration each Thanksgiving Day!

I am the only one left carrying those celebratory memories of an earlier generation. Now, I am thinking much about the present. What are the most important remembrances we can pass on to our children and grandchildren? Perhaps it is about sitting around the table and sharing what we are thankful for. The younger ones always delight us with their thankful thoughts, and the thoughts become more serious the older we become. The multi-generational expressions of thanksgiving are precious reminders to me of God’s continuing faithfulness, not only in my life but in His world. God has been faithful in the past, He is faithful in the present, and He will be faithful to all generations!

Let’s look at God’s Word and what we are told about being thankful:

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.
Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us,
And not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise:
Be thankful unto him and bless his name.
For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting;
And his truth endureth to all generations.
Psalm 100 (KJV)

Let your roots grow down into him,
And let your lives be built on him.
Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught
And you will overflow with thankfulness.
Colossians 2:7 (NLT)

Don’t worry about anything;
Instead, pray about everything.
Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done.
Philippians 4:6 (NLT)

Won’t you approach this Thanksgiving Day and the upcoming Christmas season reading and reflecting on Colossians 4:2 (NLT)? “Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.”
