Neighbor Kids!

Oh, how I love my quiet time in the morning!  As I sat down to read my Bible, I was so excited, the
kids were still sleeping.  I took two sips of coffee, and then I saw him!
Two eyes peeking in at me from the front window, the little seven-year-old neighbor was up and
ready to play. 7 a.m.!

Every day we averaged 8 to 10 kids in our back yard and small home; only 3 were ours. The lady
who lived behind us asked if our yard was the public playground. When we went away, the neighbor
kids would sit on our front porch until we returned home.  We would send them home so we could
eat supper; they would go next door, look over the fence, and shout, “Is an hour up? Can we come
over now?”  Aye Yai Yai!

What’s a mom to do?
“Call Focus on the Family, of course!”  As I talked to the gentleman on the phone, I became a little
annoyed as he started to laugh.  This was serious, and I felt my mental health was in jeopardy.
So, I asked, “Do you think it’s OK to build a high fence?”
He laughed even more.

Then he said, “Well, I can tell you, lady, high fence, low fence, it doesn’t matter what kind of
fence, a fence will not keep the children away.  Lady, I used to be one of those neighbor kids and
had it not been for a neighbor like you, I would not be here today.”
Jesus opened my heart that day and instead of resenting the little munchkins that flocked to our
home, I realized that this time with the neighbor children, as well as our own children, was short.
Jesus helped us to see that these children were our ministry, and they were worth our time and

Those neighborhood children are grown now, but one of my greatest joys is to come home and see
one of them waiting on our front porch.

Mark 9:36&37
“Then he put a child among them.  Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, “Anyone who
welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me
welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me,””
